3. Bookings & Cost
Courses or individual lessons may be booked by telephoning: (0118) 926 5369 or

lessons may be for 1, 1½ or 2 hour sessions and can be arranged to start on any
¼ hour as suitable.
Monday to Friday lessons are normally arranged between 7.30am and 8.30pm.
Weekend lessons are arranged by special arrangement
How long is a course likely to take?
The length of the course depends entirely upon your own driving skills,
experience and capabilities. Each course is tailored to your individual needs. I
would be delighted if you passed easily with very few lessons but will be
patient if you are a slow learner and need extra help. As a guide, a quick
learner would perhaps need 15 hours to pass the test.

5. Who are We?
My name is Dave Stent and I own the Earley School of Motoring, which has now
been operating for over 20 years.
.jpg)
I am a sole trader, but at one time employed a retired Police Inspector as an
Instructor
I served originally in the Fire Service, both as a professional fireman and as a
junior officer. For the large part of this service I drove fire appliances
operationally to all emergencies. I have operated many types of vehicle
including pumping appliances, aerial appliances (turntable ladders and hydraulic
platforms) and also heavy lifting cranes ("Holmes 600" - max. pull of 72 tonnes).
I hold a full licence to drive the following 14 groups:
A,B,BE,B1,C,C1E,D1D1E,f,k,l,n,p. That is generally motorcycles, cars, lorries
and articulated lorries (LGV class 1) plus I have a provisional coach licence.
I have been registered as a fully qualified Department of Transport Approved
Driving Instructor since 1984, with an Instructor Grading and established pass
rate above that of the national average. I am in the R.A.C register of Approved
Driving Instructors and appear in "The Directory of Excellence" for the Reading
area plus other publications. I am a trainer on Police remedial courses operated
by AA DriveTech.

6. Current School Vehicles
My current vehicle in 2010
is a 5 door Ford Fiesta 1.4 Zetec Climate. This offers a high degree of comfort
whilst learning to drive and is fully dual controlled. Examiners do not provide
vehicles, therefore it is usual to use ours for your driving test.
.jpg)
There is usually another vehicle available when the need arises (for example,
when the Fiesta is being serviced). The present backup vehicle is also a Ford
Fiesta, and is fully dual controlled.
Any vehicle that is used on test must be completely roadworthy to MoT standard
and fitted with an extra internal mirror on the passenger side. If the vehicle
has been the subject of a recall by the manufacturer then you must be able to
produce the certificate of correction issued by the garage. It must have a
seatbelt and headrest for the examiner. There are also other regulations in
force as to the type of vehicles that are acceptable, which are often updated by
the DSA.

HOW THE ONE THEORY TEST
WORKS IN TWO PARTS
Your Theory Test will consist of a Multiple Choice element and a Hazard
Perception element.
You must pass both parts together, or you will have to take them both again
another day.
First you will be shown a Confirmation Screen which confirms your name and the
category of the test you are taking. You have the choice to Start or Exit the
test.
The Multiple Choice Element
***Multiple Choice Practice Session – The practice session on the computer will
explain to you how to work through the multiple choice element of the test and
how to choose and check your answers. The practice questions should allow you to
become comfortable with how the test will work. These questions do not carry a
mark towards your test result.
***Multiple Choice Element – This part of the exam will consist of 50 multiple
choice questions. You must answer each question, but you will be able to check
questions and change answers throughout the test by using the flag and review
button. The maximum time allowed to complete the multiple choice questions part
of the test will be 57 minutes and candidates will need to achieve a pass mark
of at least 43 correct responses out of 50 (as of 3rd September 2007).
***Optional Trial Questions – They sometimes try out new multiple choice
questions to see if they will use them in future theory tests. After you have
finished the multiple choice element of your test you may be offered trial
questions to complete. You do not have to complete these, and they do not count
towards your overall score.
Short Break – You can take up to 3 minutes break before starting the second part
of your Theory Test, which will test your hazard perception skills. You cannot
leave your desk during this break.
The Hazard Perception Element
***Hazard Perception Tutorial Video – At the start of the hazard perception part
of the test you will be shown a short instruction video. This video will tell
you how the hazard perception part of the theory test works. You can watch the
instruction video twice if you need to. You will need to wear headphones to
listen to the instruction video. You can take them off at the end of the video,
unless you prefer to keep them on. There is no sound on the test clips.
***Hazard Perception Element – The hazard perception element tests your ability
to look at and understand the whole road scene and to recognise possible traffic
hazards at an early stage, as they develop. Your results tell us whether you
have learned the hazard perception skills you will need to avoid hazards, or to
deal with them safely.
***During the test you will see film clips of traffic scenes from a drivers
point of view. The film clip in the instruction video is just like the ones used
in the test. This clip and the ones used in the test, contain one or more
hazards that show a situation developing that involves other road users.
***As the clips in this test are filmed on real roads they contain all types of
hazards. The only hazards you will be scored on are the developing ones. Don’t
worry, you won’t lose points for responding to other hazards.
***The hazard perception part of the test will contain 14 video clips and 15
scoreable hazards. In one of the clips there will be two scoreable hazards that
you need to respond to.
***Each developing hazard may require the driver to take some form of action
such as changing speed or direction. You should respond by pressing either the
left or right mouse button, whichever you prefer, as soon as you think, from the
clues in the clip that this might happen.
***You will only see the test clips once, so you will need to concentrate. You
cannot go back and you cannot change your response.
***When you press one of the mouse buttons the video will not stop or slow down,
but you will see a red flag appear at the bottom of the screen each time you
press. This red flag shows that your response has been recorded.
***Your responses to the clips will be automatically recorded by the computer.
They will be compared to marks set by DSA driving experts. The marking for each
scoreable hazard is split into 5 parts. If you respond in the first part you
will get 5 points, in the second part 4 points, and so on down to 1 point. If
you fail to respond within the marked area of the clip, or are responding in an
unacceptable manner, 0 points will be given for that clip.
***The earlier you pick up on the clues and press the mouse button to record
that you have seen a hazard the higher your score. But, if you have pressed the
button to show you have noticed a hazard and the situation changes, for example
because another vehicle comes into view, you may need to press the button again.
***You do need to be careful though. Because if you make lots of unnecessary
responses in a very short space of time, or throughout the clip, you will score
0 for that clip. If this happens you will see a warning message on screen at the
end of the clip.
Optional trial clip – After the hazard perception element, you may be shown a
video clip that is being researched for future tests. This does not count as
part of your test. They would like you to respond to this clip as it helps them
in developing the test.
Test Result – At the end of your test you will leave your desk and make your way
to the Administrator’s desk to sign the signature log. You will then be given
your result letter. The letter will contain your score on both elements and the
test result. If you have been successful, you will be given an Official Driving
Theory Test Certificate in addition to the result letter.
